When designing the entryway in our new house, I wanted a space that blended color, coastal style and modern touches. To style a colorful, coastal entryway, I first thought through the functionality of the space. The simpler the better was my mantra during this season of life! We had very little kids at the time and I did not want any additional surfaces where random items could collect. I decided on no table, along with no baskets, throw pillows or blankets. I didn’t want anything that didn’t serve an immediate purpose. This space started out as a very blank slate as our house was a new construction build with pain white walls.
Coastal Entryway Design Plan
Since the entryway is the first impression into our home, being intentional about my style in this space was important to me. To achieve the colorful, coastal entryway look I was going for, I mixed and matched an assortment of pieces and colors. I did not have a specific source of inspiration for this space, but did have a rough idea of the layout that I wanted. I knew that I wanted a mirror, framed by sconces with some type of seating below it.
Selecting a Style and Colors
I love when decorators and designers mix different styles in the spaces they create. In this case, I knew that I wanted to mix a more classic, modern look with a coastal vibe. I planned for the mirror and lighting to be more classic, while the bench, pillow and rug bring in the coastal look and feel.
Entryways are also a great place to be bold with color and pattern. I have seen other colorful coastal entries with light aqua walls and love the look of it. The paint color I chose is come sail away by Benjamin Moore. I decided to contrast it with different shades of coral accents.
Colorful, Coastal Furniture
There is so much great inspiration for coastal spaces and so many great places to pick coastal furniture from. Truth be told, I was feeling quite hesitant about what type of seating I wanted in this space. I stumbled upon this white-washed looking bench at a thrift shop of all places and decided it would achieve the look I was going for on a budget. I covered the cushion with coral colored performance-type fabric from JoAnn Fabrics to match an old stripe pillow I already had.
Choosing Gold Lighting
The hardware in our home is all brushed nickel, but I don’t mind mixing metals so I chose gold lighting for this space. If you look closely as the sconces, you can see that they have little accents on them that make them look like bamboo. While modern, they also have the coastal touch! The sphere chandelier softens the corners of the space. I like the style of it, but left off the crystal accents it came with.
Decor items
The mirror in our entryway was given to me as a gift. In the future, I’d love to update it, but it works for now. The light coral runner is from Wayfair, but no longer available. It’s washable, which I love and I tend to like rugs with repeating, geometric patterns. I put up some wall hooks to hang our sun hats on. It’s nice to be able to grab them as we’re headed out the door and they don’t get crushed this way.
