Come see our classic Old Florida inspired bonus room decor. Tropical touches, darker tones and pops of color make this room a great space to relax in.

The bonus room in our house sits at the top of our stairs. It is the perfect all-purpose space for our family. I was very intentional in creating zones in this room to maximize the space we had. A TV area was a must. I also wanted a table to play games at and some dedicated play space for the kids. I know it’s popular to have a dedicated play room or toy room. We did not pick a home with an extra room for this purpose, but I decided to create a mini-play room for the kids in an unused space. More on that below!
Bonus Room Decor Design Board
For the main TV and table area of the room, I wanted to create as much of an “old Florida” vibe as I could. Think lots of rattan and wicker, colors like green and coral and of course, some quirky palm prints. My inspiration was the Golden Girls TV show family room, but I wasn’t willing to purchase all new furniture and accessories. Our furniture is much newer than my inspiration, so I needed to evolve the look and feel while still holding true to things like color, pattern and material I was aiming for.

Old Florida Style TV Area
For the TV zone of the bonus room, I knew I’d be reusing a dark gray couch from our previous home along with a small marble top side table. The third item I reused is the dark wood TV cabinet. All these items made it through our move in good shape, so it was important to me to use them again. I got the rattan side table at the end of the couch from a vintage reseller than lives near me. The two floor lamps are from Home Goods. I picked them out because they have a pattern that looks like bamboo. Here’s a similar option from Home Depot. The pillows are a mix from World Market and H&M Home.

The green pillows have small insects and gold piping that I love. I can’t remember where I got the tropical palm print poufs from, but the palm print is just perfect for the space. The curtains are from Bed Bath & Beyond. I’m really pleased with them on all four of the windows. Last but not least, The old school tropical print above the couch and navy blue cotton blanket on the back of the couch are my Goodwill finds for this room.

The Table Area of the Bonus Room
At the far end of the bonus room is a vintage table that was my grandparents. The two coral stools that sit at it are from Home Goods. The ceiling light fixture is from Wayfair. It casts a nice light for when the kids are playing in the room. The blue lamp on the table, the pots the plants are in and the magnolia wall art are all from Goodwill. I really enjoy mixing new and thrifted things in each space in our home. It’s smart financially, gives my spaces a unique style and also allows me to freshen things as often as I like.

Kids Area Play Table
To the right of the TV, there is a blank area of the room where I created a small kids work area. There is a vintage kids table and chairs set that I spray painted blue. My daughter will often set up a tea party or have snacks at it. There is also a shelf made out of four wood crates and some dowels that I got for free from a neighbor. I DIY’d the felt banner with the kids names on it. It turned out really cute.

Play Closet
Across from the play table, is what I lovingly call our play closet. It is by far, my favorite area of the bonus room. The play closet is a large walk-in storage closet off the side of the bonus room. When we moved in, I knew I wanted to make it a play space for the kids. I took the wire shelving out of it and painted the entire space Clear Skies from Benjamin Moore. I added a white beaded chandelier similar to this one and just love it. The space has been a lounge area, toy room and someday my son hopes to turn it into a gaming room.

Hallway to Bedrooms
Lastly, just outside of the play closet is the hallway that leads to our laundry rooms, the kids bedrooms and their bathroom. Our home is very efficient from a design perspective, which I love. We felt we had wasted square footage we were paying for in our last house, which was a major catalyst for our move.
To break up all the white of the hallway, I painted the wall across from the staircase Landscape Palm by Sherwin Williams. The gold mirror was on my list to buy as I started planning for the new house and this turned out to be the perfect spot for it. The two shelves on either side of it and the blue and white pots are my Goodwill finds. The topiaries are just green craft balls stuck on dowels in floral foam. Down the rest of the hall leads to the kids side of the house!
